All too often, years of hard-earned progress achieved by communities, governments, and development partners are set back by disasters, conflict, and other shocks. Climate change and environmental degradation further magnify the risks. Moreover, in an era of rapid and often unplanned urbanization, increasing numbers of people and assets are located in high exposure areas,1 such as coastal mega-cities and flood plains. To help safeguard development gains from the impact of natural hazards, UNICEF supports children, communities and governments to prevent, reduce, and manage disaster risk, including measures to adapt to climate change.
